ABOUT OSTEOPATHY

The Principles

Osteopathy is a manual science rooted in the understanding and application of osteopathic assessment and treatment based on the core principles:

  1. The body is a dynamic unit of function

  2. Structure and Function are interrelated

  3. The body has self-healing and self-regulating capabilities

Treatment addresses the hard and soft tissues within all the layers of the body to promote the inherent self-healing and self-regulating abilities. Treatment focuses on coordination between structures and integrating changes made in treatment in a gentle, rhythmical way.

The Science

Osteopathy today is based on an extensive understanding of anatomy, physiology, and collective mechanics. The advancement of science throughout the 19th and 20th century have further strengthened the original founding principles set out by A. T Still that were heavily influenced by Indigenous knowledge and understanding of nature and the human body.

The Past, the present, the future

Dr Andrew Taylor Still, born in August 1828 is credited with uncovering the powerful healing capabilities of Osteopathy and sharing it with the masses. Before Osteopathy, he was a physician who practiced based on medical knowledge at the time which included: purging, bloodletting and the use of compounds such as heavy metals, spirits, and herbs. He took influence from the Indigenous communities in the formation of Osteopathy. He wrote about living in proximity with the Indigenous communities of Kansas, most notably with the Shawnee people. He wrote about working as a physician with the Shawnee people and learning their language.

The foundation of Osteopathy was built on the knowledge and the bodies of the Indigenous people. Still’s deep understanding regarding the bony framework, and the interconnectedness of the human body was done through the exhuming and research of Indigenous bodies that were removed from their burial sites by Still without permission from the Indigenous community.  Still continued his life as a physician on the frontier of the American civil war where he increasingly lost faith in the medical system. Adding on to the horrific experiences of the civil war, Still lost his first wife to childbirth, and 4 of his children.  He explored more holistic approaches to treating the human body, focusing on studying the relationship between structure and function. Still recognized the body’s ability to self-heal and regulate. And that the key to health was found within the anatomical forces of the body being normal allowing for proper movement through the structure and proper function. Osteopathy has always been made up of a collection of minds that seek to further the understanding of anatomy, physiology and Osteopathy to validate the healing capabilities Nature can bestow on the human body.  This remains true for the profession today, Osteopathy is an umbrella term for practitioners of Osteopathy such as doctors of osteopathy (DO), osteopathic manual practitioners (DOMP, M.OMSc) and registered manual osteopaths (RMO).  In Canada there exists organizations that recenter Indigenous voices in the Osteopathic community. The College of Registered Osteopaths is a non-profit that is working towards better regulation of Osteopathy in Canada. You can find out more, or find Indigenous Osteopathic practitioners by clicking the link titled CRMO.

About KT Osteopathy

My name is Katie Davidson, I have an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology from the University of Windsor with a specialization in movement science and, most recently, I achieved a Master’s in Osteopathic manual science from the Canadian Academy Of Osteopathy.

My love for Osteopathy stems from my deep appreciation for nature and the laws that govern every piece of living material. Through my time at the Canadian Academy Of Osteopathy, I learned the practice through a classical lens which focused on the understanding of principles set out by A. T Still.

The most beneficial tool I acquired throughout my studies was a comprehension of functional anatomy. Which combines the study of anatomy with the understanding of collective mechanics (i.e how the parts of the body work together as a whole unit).

I am an OSTCAN certified member, my mission is to provide my community with affordable Osteopathic treatments without compromising the quality of treatment. My intent is to bring the anatomy back to its foundational structure to allow it to function optimally.

KT Osteopathy is honoured to be a part of the Safe Space Alliance. This non-profit directory allows members of the LGBTQI2S community to create and promote comfortable and queer-friendly spaces.

SERVICES OFFERED

Initial Treatment
$75

The initial appointment will involve a review of health history, informed consent and a general treatment. Initial treatment will globally address the superficial and intermediate layers of anatomy such as the fascia and large superficial muscles that can have influence on many different structures in the body. General treatment will also address the major vascular points of the body to ensure proper supply and drainage is occurring throughout the body. The general nature of the first treatment will help determine how the body will react to future osteopathic treatment.

Follow-up Treatment
$60

Follow-ups are uniquely tailored to how the body presents itself. The practitioner will look for areas with asymmetry, restriction of motion,  palpable change in tissue texture and will consider the subjective complaints to create a whole treatment. Expectations of follow up appointments include more localized treatment to anywhere in the body such as the spine, the shoulder, the hips, down the arm or legs, neck and head. Treatment will spiral in and out of the tissue layers superficial to deep to compare and contrast the findings and changes made throughout treatment.
